Help:Adding Images
From CCCOnline Faculty Wiki
How to Add a Picture to an Article
- 1. To add an picture to a page, click on the Image button
in the editing toolbar to insert image coding where you want to place the picture (see the result in the picture just below).
- The code includes a "placeholder" name which you must replace with the correct file name. (You may also type the image coding in directly with the correct name.)
- NOTE: You must also upload the image file to the Wiki site. It's generally best to upload the file after creating the link on the page. See uploading directions below (Uploading Images).
- 2. The picture to be entered must be in one of these three formats: .gif, .jpg, or .png.
- 3. You may add various options separated with a pipe ("|") after the image name. Here are some examples:
- Placement and sizing options:
- Image appears where link is:
- RESULT: Places the full-size picture on the page in the place where the link is located.
- Placement and sizing options:
- Aligning location on page:
- RESULT: Produces a left-aligned full-size version. (You may also use "center" and "right" to align in those positions.)
- Creating thumbnails:
- RESULT: Automatically generates a right-aligned thumbnail of the image.
- Sizing thumbnails:
- RESULT: Automatically generates a right-aligned thumbnail of the image with a width of 165 pixels (default is 180 pixels).
- Additional options:
- Adding ALT text:
- RESULT: Adds descriptive alternate text (per ADA requirements) to the image - replace the "alt text" with your description.
- Additional options:
- Combining options and adding a caption
- RESULT: Automatically generates a center-aligned thumbnail of the image with a width of 170 pixels, a height of 160 pixels, and the caption "A caption."
- IMPORTANT: Image names are case-sensitive. For example, if an image is called Picture.jpg then neither picture.jpg nor Picture.JPG will find it.
Uploading Images
- 1. You upload an image by using the Upload file link in the toolbox in the left menu on the Wiki page. (Pictures must be in .JPG, .PNG, or .GIF formats.)
- 2. This screen appears:
- 3. Click on the "Browse..." button to find the file on your computer.
- NOTE: Selecting a file will place its name in both the Source filename box and the Destination (Wiki) filename box. You may change the destination name at this point, if you wish - for example, if you typed the name in the link as picture.jpg and now you see that it is Picture.jpg on your computer, you can change it to a lower-case "p" in the destination box.
- 4. Be sure to also add a full description of the image in the Summary box for later reference.
- 5. Press the "Upload" button to finish the upload. This may take some time if you have a slow Internet connection.
